What is retrofit double glazing?

Retrofit double glazing replaces your existing window and frame with a new uPVC double-glazed unit built to the exact size of your existing opening. We remove the old window and frame completely, fit the new unit, then seal and trim it so the finish looks original to the house.

A double-glazed unit uses two panes of glass separated by a sealed gap, usually filled with air or argon gas, to form an insulating barrier. That barrier is what cuts heat transfer, reduces outside noise and helps control condensation, compared with a single pane of glass. A well-sealed frame also cuts the draughts that carry dust and outside moisture into the house. Retrofitting it can also increase your property's market value and its appeal to buyers looking for energy-efficient features.

uPVC vs aluminium: which insulates better?

uPVC is a poor conductor of heat, so it insulates well on its own; its multi-chambered frame design limits heat transfer further, which typically gives it a lower U-value than an aluminium frame of the same size.

Aluminium conducts heat well, which can create a thermal bridge, where heat bypasses the insulation through the frame itself. Modern aluminium frames add thermal breaks to reduce this, but uPVC's low conductivity avoids the problem at the material level.

Types of double glazing, and what's inside an IGU

Every double-glazed window is built around an insulated glass unit (IGU): two panes of glass separated by a sealed, gas-filled gap. Low-E coatings add a reflective layer that cuts radiant heat transfer for extra efficiency. Argon fill is denser than air, so it slows heat loss further, and acoustic glazing uses thicker panes or an acoustic membrane where outside noise is the main concern.

The gas fill and the width of the gap between the panes both affect how well the unit performs, and the unit is sealed to keep moisture out and protect the insulating gap over time.

How the installation works, and what to consider

We start with an assessment of your existing frames. If they're in good condition, we can retrofit a new double-glazed unit into them, which keeps the original look of the house and minimises disruption. If the frames are damaged or unsuitable, a full window replacement is the better option.

The condition of the existing frame, the gap width and gas fill, and the quality of the final seal all affect the result, which is why we handle the whole process ourselves rather than leaving any step to guesswork.
